While there are more and more outdoor display applications, the viewability under extreme ambient condition becomes the main concern for the display design. This is because usually the luminance of LCD display is only 250 to 450nits, but the ambient brightness may reach 5000nits. In this case, the physical surface of LCD display device reflects most of light from ambient light source, thus becoming invisible to human eyes. Even the brightness of the display is high; the contrast between the ambient and the display is too low. Therefore, it is still not easy to read the LCD screen.

Advantech In-house Sunlight Readable Solution helps enhance LCD sunlight readability without adding any backlight cost thereby causing no increase in power or heat. Our solution is to laminate the optical film directly to the panel surface with adhesive which virtually eliminates the reflection. The optical film helps reduce the total reflection of the display to less than 2% of the ambient light, thus eliminating loss in visual performance and visibility. As a result, Advantech sunlight readable solution enables a 300 to 450 nits display which is not viewable in direct sunlight, to be readable in even very high ambient brightness or indirect lighting conditions.
