5W Questions to Get a Better Understanding of ePaper and What it Can Do

2023/8/15

What is ePaper?

ePaper is an electronic display technology designed to replicate the appearance of traditional paper. E-ink, which emerged from the MIT Media Lab in 1997, stands as the forerunner in e-paper technology. Constructed using film materials and paired with a PCBA control board, ePaper finds application across a wide range of uses.

Why should we choose ePaper?

1. ePaper displays retain images without power.

2. ePaper does not require a backlight, produces no heat, and is visible from any angle, much like traditional paper.

3. ePaper device management is conducted through software and system integration. Remote control and roaming on networks are useful added features and operation can save substantial time and cost.

Where can we use ePaper?

ePaper devices are widely used. Wherever you can find traditional paper, ePaper can replace it. The most common areas of implementation include factories, warehouses, smart buildings, retail, and smart cities.

For example:

  • Factories: production run cards / robot arm signage / machine maintenance / SOP
  • Warehouses: inventory management / finished goods status management / RMA parts management
  • Buildings: exhibition visitor routes / meeting room signs / visitor guides
  • Retail: menu boards / price tags
  • iCity: way finders / bus stop signage / road signage

Who can benefit from ePaper?

From governments to companies to individuals, everyone can benefit from ePaper. The Taiwanese government acquired ePaper devices for road signs and bulletin displays. Airline companies have acquired ePaper devices for orientation name cards and digital signage in their training rooms. Manufacturers have utilized it in warehouses, production lines, and offices. Additionally, individuals can use ePaper for digital calendars or customizable name cards.

How can you use ePaper to reduce cost and increase efficiency?

Refer to the following successful case studies.

How does an image get displayed on ePaper?

The e-Paper module display uses a flexible plate with an interface and a reference system to update display images. Designers can base their applications on either wired or wireless connectivity to update display images. USB, mobile APPs, agent tools, and servers are all technologies that can be integrated with ePaper.

What are the power needs of ePaper?

One of the most significant features of ePaper is its low power consumption. ePaper can receive power by NFC wireless charging, reusable batteries, or disposable batteries.

Common ePaper applications

1. Factory automation:  Production work orders are initiated by the back-end manager so that the electronic label automatically lights up displaying the quantity required. The operator then organizes the products according to the instructions on the label.

2. Healthcare: The digital bedside card system is one of the most common applications of ePaper in healthcare because doctors and nurses can easily see each patient’s basic information and condition.

3. iCity: ePaper can be used for roadside signage, exhibition visitor routes, smart college course schedules and more. Retail applications are very common. ePaper signage has been used in Europe for bus stops to deliver effective signage while saving electricity.
